The VSHC Guide to Bedford. Part 2: Top 5 Places to Drink
The Vintage Suit Hire Company is proud to welcome visitors from all over the country owing to the unique nature of what we do. As purveyors of our worsted wool suits for hire or purchase, our shop is perfectly located in the heart of our home town, Bedford.
We have curated a series of lists of places to go to if you have the time before or after your appointment with us, and the second is related to the wide variety of drinking establishments on offer.
Bedford has a proud tradition of brewing, and the Vintage Suit Hire Company shop is located right next to the site of the original Higgins Brewery that started it all (Now transformed into the Higgins Museum). Charles Wells, although now owned by Marstons, is still very much a local brewery and their craft beer sub-brand Charlie Wells beers are served in our shop.
Here is where we suggest you could find a tipple when visiting Bedford:
Brewhouse and Kitchen: We LOVE this place. The décor is awesome, they have a huge menu of beer on tap or in bottles and what more, they brew in-house. If you like your beers hoppy go for Invarsity (6%) or for something more quaffable the Castle Lane Pale is named after the road we call home. Brewhouse and Kitchen offer 5l kegs to take out or 1l or 2l growlers if you fancy one for the road!
The Three Cups: Mark this one down as the friendliest welcome in Bedford and place you will most likely find Mr. VSHC when not working. They have an ever-changing range of guest ales and will serve you a paddle of 1/3s if you want to try them all before committing to a pint. This is the kind of pub you can stay in all day and be made to feel like a local. Great value tasty pub grub too.
Bears and Tales: Mr. VSHC doesn’t really do cocktails, but he makes an exception for Bears and Tales. Bartender Tom is an absolute wizard but be sure you plan ahead if you want to visit because it’s a small (but perfectly formed) place that does get booked up! We honestly can’t recommend this place enough and when you visit you will understand why this place wins awards.
The Wellington Arms: This place is a Bedford Institution and a must-visit if you are REALLY in to beer. There aren’t many places like this left in the UK, tucked down a quiet residential street they have an incredible range of real ales and fridges full of interesting Belgian bottles for you to browse through and take up to the bar. The walls are adorned with Breweriana and it makes this place very special.
The Rose: We have to mention The Rose… If sport is your thing, head to The Rose as they show all the football and rugby and have an outdoor screen in the summer. Every town has a pub like this and everyone in Bedford has a story to tell about a night out at the Rose. If you stay for the long-haul, this place turns into one of the busiest nightspots in town. Cheap, cheerful and the kind of place that gives you a killer hangover.
